Narrative Vision at Limerick’s Riverfest: Poolside Universe

Riverfest is the heartbeat of Limerick. For this year’s edition, I chose this vibrant festival to unveil an inhabited side of my work as a French photographer based in Ireland. By exhibiting my Poolside Universe series in the heart of the city, I offered a unique experience, where the human presence transfigures Bawnmore’s architecture into a graphic work of art frozen in time.
A 5-Day Residency at Treaty City Brewery
Throughout the festival, I displayed four key prints from my series at Treaty City Brewery. Located in the historic Medieval Quarter, this iconic venue provided a character-filled backdrop for my work.
A Dialogue with Limerick’s Heritage
Exhibiting at Treaty City created a fascinating visual tension. My photographs — characterized by a minimalist aesthetic, strict geometric lines, and aquatic blue tones — dwelt within the brewery’s raw stone walls. For five days, festival-goers discovered how human-centered narrative photography can appropriate a heritage site to tell a modern, serene story.
Character at the Heart of Bawnmore
The four pieces selected originated from my work at the Bawnmore swimming pool. In this series, the pool is not merely a backdrop. I stage models to embody emotions or moments of stillness. My goal is to capture what I call “inhabited melancholy”: the character becomes the key to interpreting the space, transforming the athletic venue into a theater of light where the viewer is invited into contemplation.
My Vision: A “Swimming Pool” Aesthetic of Pastels and Geometry
My work on Poolside Universe is built on a search for visual perfection and serenity.
An Homage to a Plastic, Symmetrical World
My series explores a world I like to describe as “plastic.” I am inspired by contemporary Fine Art aesthetics where models, with frozen, almost sculptural poses, become architectural elements in their own right. Contrast is at the heart of my thought process: pure white swim caps and vibrant red swimsuits break the softness of the beige tiles and the blue of the water.
Capturing Visual Silence
What defines my signature is the use of leading lines and symmetry to create a feeling of absolute calm. At Bawnmore, I sought to isolate every movement to make it timeless. Every detail — a shadow on the tiles, the texture of a locker room wall, the refraction of light — is meticulously chosen to build an image that is viewed like a painting.
Beyond the Lens: Sharing the Craft Just before this exhibition, I shared my creative process during a hands-on session. To see how I guided other photographers in composing these scenes at Bawnmore, read my dedicated article on the Artis Aura Workshop.
Céline Mermier: Bringing a French Eye to Irish Territory
Moving to Limerick has allowed me to blend my European visual heritage with Ireland’s unique light. My ambition is to be recognized as a leading voice in narrative photography in Ireland, transforming everyday locations into profound aesthetic stories.
